What Is PRF Hair Restoration and How Does It Work?

PRF stands for Platelet-Rich Fibrin, and it's one of the most effective natural treatments available for hair thinning and early hair loss. The process starts with a small blood draw, similar to what you'd have at a routine physical. We spin your blood in a specialized centrifuge to separate out a concentrated layer packed with platelets, white blood cells, stem cells, and fibrin. That fibrin piece is what sets PRF apart from the older PRP version. Because no anticoagulants are added, the growth factors are released slowly over days and weeks instead of all at once, which gives you a longer, more powerful healing and regenerative response.

When PRF is injected into the scalp, those growth factors get to work waking up dormant hair follicles, improving blood flow to the area, and encouraging the follicles to produce thicker, healthier strands. It also helps extend the growth phase of your hair cycle, which is a big part of why hair starts looking fuller over time. PRF doesn't create new follicles, but it can revive the ones that are still there but underperforming, which makes it especially effective for people in the early to mid stages of hair thinning.

PRF hair restoration is a great option for both men and women dealing with thinning hair, receding hairlines, widening parts, or overall loss of density. It's also helpful for clients who want to boost the results of other hair loss treatments like minoxidil or finasteride, or who aren't ready for a hair transplant. It can even be used after a transplant to support healing and improve the density of the newly placed grafts. During your consultation, we'll look at your scalp, talk through your history and goals, and figure out whether PRF is the right fit for you.

A typical PRF hair appointment takes about an hour. We start with the blood draw, usually just one or two small vials depending on the area being treated. While your sample is spinning in the centrifuge, we'll cleanse your scalp and apply a topical numbing cream to keep you comfortable. Once the PRF is ready, it's injected into the scalp in the thinning or affected areas using a very fine needle. The injections are quick, and most clients find the treatment very tolerable, especially with numbing. Start to finish, the actual injection portion takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Downtime is minimal. You might have some mild tenderness, redness, or slight swelling on the scalp for 24 to 48 hours, similar to what you'd feel after a workout. Some clients notice a bit of tightness or a dull headache the first day that resolves quickly. You'll want to avoid washing your hair, using hair products, intense workouts, saunas, and alcohol for the first 24 hours, but after that you're back to your normal routine.

Results from PRF are gradual and build over time. This is not a quick fix, it's a regenerative treatment, so patience pays off. Most clients notice reduced shedding within the first 4 to 6 weeks, followed by new baby hairs and thicker regrowth over the next 3 to 6 months. For the best results, we recommend a series of 3 to 4 sessions spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months to keep the results going. Consistency really matters here, and clients who complete the full series tend to see the most dramatic improvement.

PRF hair restoration isn't a good fit if you have certain blood disorders, take blood thinners, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active scalp infection, or have certain autoimmune conditions. It also works best on follicles that are still active, so if you've had complete hair loss in an area for a long time, PRF may not be effective there. We'll go over your full health history and scalp condition during your consultation to make sure it's the right treatment for you and to build a plan tailored to your goals.
