What laser hair removal actually does.
Laser hair removal works by sending a wavelength of light that pigment absorbs, converting it to heat and disabling the follicle that produced the hair. That mechanism is why two things matter more than the brand name on the machine: the contrast between your hair and your skin, and the operator's judgment about energy settings. Get either wrong and you either waste the session or injure the skin.
Our device is a long-pulse laser calibrated for Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI. Longer wavelengths and longer pulse durations pass more safely around the melanin in the skin while still delivering enough energy to the follicle — precisely what older alexandrite lasers couldn't do for deeper skin tones. We treat a genuinely diverse patient population from Hamden, West Haven, and New Haven, and settings are confirmed against your skin with a test patch rather than pulled from a default.
A typical course runs 6–8 treatments spaced about 6 weeks apart. That spacing isn't arbitrary: hair cycles through growth, transition, and rest phases, and the laser only disables follicles caught actively growing. Any single session reaches roughly 20–30% of the follicles in an area — which is why the series exists, and why anyone promising permanent results in two visits is overselling it.
Most patients notice real thinning after the second or third session and finish with 80–95% long-term reduction. What remains grows back finer, lighter, and slower, and an annual maintenance session usually holds it. Faces and hormonally driven growth (PCOS, perimenopause) need more maintenance than legs or underarms, because hormones keep recruiting new follicles — the goal there is sustained control rather than a one-time finish.
Practically: shave the area the day before, arrive with clean skin and no lotion or deodorant, and avoid sun for two weeks beforehand — a fresh tan changes the contrast the laser depends on and forces us to lower energy or reschedule. Sessions at our North Haven studio run about 15 minutes for an upper lip to an hour for full legs or a back, with no real downtime either way — short enough that plenty of patients fit one into a lunch break off Washington Avenue.

Most healthy adults over 18 who aren't pregnant or breastfeeding, across every Fitzpatrick skin type. The laser targets pigment in the follicle, so it works best on hair that has pigment in it — grey, white, and very fine blonde hair respond poorly regardless of device, and we'll tell you that at the consult rather than after you've paid for a series.
Temporary redness and slight swelling around the follicles for a few hours — it looks a bit like goosebumps and settles the same day. Rare hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones, which is exactly what correct settings and an experienced operator exist to prevent.
No sun exposure, hot baths, saunas, or intense exercise for 24 hours. Mineral SPF daily on any treated area that sees daylight. No waxing, plucking, threading, or epilating between treatments — shaving is fine, and required before each session.
