What Is Lumecca IPL and How Does It Work?
Lumecca is the most advanced intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment on the market, made by InMode. It works by sending pulses of broad-spectrum light into the skin, where the energy is absorbed by pigment and blood vessels beneath the surface. That light converts to heat, which breaks down unwanted melanin and collapses tiny broken capillaries so your body can naturally clear them away. At the same time, it stimulates collagen production, so you're not just fading spots but also improving tone, texture, and overall glow. The result is a clearer, brighter complexion that looks lit from within.
Lumecca can address a wide range of skin concerns in a single treatment. It's one of the best options out there for sun damage, age spots, freckles, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, facial redness, broken capillaries, and post-acne marks. It also helps refine pores and soften fine lines as collagen builds over time. Lumecca can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs, which makes it a go to for anyone who spends time in the sun and wants to reverse some of that damage. During your consultation we'll look at your skin, talk through what you want to address, and put together a plan based on your goals.
One of the biggest advantages of Lumecca over older IPL devices is that it's significantly more powerful, which means you see results faster and need fewer sessions. Most traditional IPL treatments take 4 to 6 sessions to get results, while Lumecca typically only needs 1 to 3 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart. A lot of clients notice a visible difference after just one treatment, with sun spots looking darker for a few days before flaking off to reveal clearer skin underneath.
A typical Lumecca appointment takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the area. We start by cleansing the skin and applying a cooling gel, then glide the Lumecca handpiece over the treatment area. The sapphire cooling tip keeps your skin comfortable throughout, and most clients describe the sensation as a quick warm snap, similar to a rubber band. It's very well tolerated, and numbing usually isn't needed.
Downtime is minimal. Your skin may look a little pink or warm right after, similar to a mild sunburn, which usually fades within a few hours. Over the next few days, any pigmented spots will darken and look more visible before gradually flaking off on their own, typically within 7 to 10 days. Don't pick at them, let them come off naturally. Makeup is fine the next day. The most important part of aftercare is sun protection. Your skin will be more sensitive to UV for a few weeks, so a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is non-negotiable to protect your results.
Because Lumecca is light based, there are a few things to know going in. It works best on skin that hasn't been recently tanned, so avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for at least 2 weeks before and after your treatment. It also may not be the right fit for very dark skin tones or for clients who are pregnant, taking certain photosensitizing medications, or have active skin infections in the area. We'll go over all of that during your consultation to make sure you're a good candidate.
Results from Lumecca typically last 6 to 12 months with proper care, and most clients benefit from a maintenance session once or twice a year to stay ahead of new sun damage. Lumecca also pairs really well with other treatments like Morpheus8, SkinPen microneedling, and injectables if you're looking to build a more complete skin plan.
