What Is SkinPen Microneedling and How Does It Work?
SkinPen is the first and only microneedling device cleared by the FDA, and it's backed by over 90 clinical studies for safety and results. The device uses 12 sterile needles to make hundreds of tiny, precise micro-channels in the surface of the skin. Your body reads those micro-channels as small injuries and jumps into repair mode, producing fresh collagen and elastin to rebuild the area. No chemicals, no heat, just your own skin doing what it already knows how to do, which is why it's considered one of the most natural ways to rejuvenate skin.
SkinPen can treat a long list of concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, surgical scars, enlarged pores, stretch marks, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and overall dull or uneven texture. It works on the face, neck, chest, and even other areas of the body like the hands or stomach. Because it doesn't use heat or light energy, SkinPen is safe and effective for all skin types and tones, including clients who aren't good candidates for laser treatments. During your consultation we'll look at your skin, go over your goals, and put together a plan that makes sense for what you want to see.
A typical SkinPen appointment takes about 45 minutes to an hour. We start by cleansing the skin and applying a topical numbing cream for about 30 minutes so you're comfortable during treatment. Once you're numb, we glide the SkinPen over the treatment area in a gentle stamping motion, and the adjustable needle depth lets us customize how deep we go based on the area and what we're treating. Most clients describe the sensation as a light buzzing with mild pressure. It's very well tolerated, and the treatment itself usually only takes 20 to 30 minutes.
Downtime is minimal. Your skin will look pink and feel slightly tight or sensitive for 24 to 48 hours, kind of like a mild sunburn. Some light flaking or dryness can show up a few days later as your skin turns over. We recommend skipping makeup, workouts, saunas, and active skincare ingredients like retinol and acids for the first 24 to 48 hours. Avoid washing your face for at least 6 hours after treatment to let the micro-channels close, and wear a broad spectrum sunscreen daily since your skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure as it heals.
One of the big advantages of SkinPen is that your skin is extra receptive to topical products right after treatment. That's why microneedling pairs so well with PRF (platelet-rich fibrin), where we apply your own growth factors during the treatment so they absorb into the deeper layers of skin through the micro-channels. It's sometimes called a vampire facial, and it boosts your results in a major way by supercharging the healing and collagen response.
Results build gradually. You'll notice a glow and smoother texture within the first week, but the real changes show up over the next 4 to 6 weeks as new collagen forms. For the best results, most people need a series of 3 sessions spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart, and more intensive concerns like acne scars or stretch marks may need up to 6 sessions. Maintenance treatments once or twice a year keep your results going strong.
SkinPen isn't recommended if you're pregnant, have an active skin infection, open wounds, or certain skin conditions in the treatment area. We'll go through your full health history during your consultation to make sure it's a good fit and build a plan tailored to your skin.
