What Is Dermaplaning and How Does It Work?
Dermaplaning is one of the simplest and most effective treatments you can do to instantly refresh your skin. Using a sterile surgical blade held at a precise angle, your provider gently glides across the surface of your skin to sweep away built up dead skin cells and the fine vellus hair that sits on your face, commonly known as peach fuzz. That top layer of buildup is what makes skin look dull, rough, or flat, so once it's removed, what's underneath is smoother, brighter, and more radiant almost immediately. There's no chemicals, no heat, and no tools deeper than the surface. It's pure physical exfoliation.
Dermaplaning is a great option for almost anyone who wants smoother, brighter skin with no downtime. It helps with dull skin, rough texture, fine lines, dry patches, and makeup that doesn't sit quite right because of peach fuzz. It's also a fantastic prep treatment before events since it leaves your skin looking incredibly fresh and helps foundation glide on flawlessly. A lot of clients add it to a facial or pair it with another treatment for maximum results. That said, dermaplaning isn't the right fit for active acne, cystic breakouts, or inflamed skin conditions like eczema or rosacea flare ups, since the blade can aggravate those areas. We'll go over your skin during your consultation to make sure it's a good fit.
One of the most common questions we get is whether the hair grows back thicker or darker. It doesn't. The fine vellus hair that dermaplaning removes is genetically programmed to grow back the same way it was before, so you don't have to worry about waking up to stubble. The hair comes back soft and fine, just like it was, usually within 3 to 4 weeks.
A typical dermaplaning appointment takes about 30 to 45 minutes. We start by thoroughly cleansing your skin, then gently glide the surgical blade across your face in short, precise strokes. There's no pain and no numbing needed. Most clients describe the sensation as a light scratching or tickling, and a lot of people find it genuinely relaxing. After the exfoliation, we'll follow up with a hydrating serum, moisturizer, and SPF to protect your freshly exposed skin.
Dermaplaning has essentially zero downtime. Your skin might look slightly pink right after, but that usually fades within an hour or two. Because your skin has just been exfoliated, it's more sensitive to sun, heat, and active ingredients for the next 24 to 48 hours. Avoid direct sun exposure, hot showers, saunas, intense workouts, and products with retinol, acids, or strong actives for at least a day or two. Sunscreen is essential, both to protect your results and to prevent any post treatment sensitivity or pigmentation.
One of the best parts of dermaplaning is that your skin becomes extra receptive to products right after. Without that layer of dead skin and fuzz sitting on top, serums, moisturizers, and treatments can absorb more deeply and work more effectively. That's why dermaplaning pairs so well with other treatments like facials, chemical peels, hydrating masks, or LED therapy. It's also a great add on before microneedling or laser treatments since it preps the skin for better product and energy penetration.
Results are immediate. You'll walk out with noticeably smoother, brighter, softer skin, and makeup will look flawless if you choose to wear it afterward. The results typically last around 3 to 4 weeks, which lines up with your skin's natural cell turnover cycle, so most clients come in for dermaplaning once a month to keep that fresh, glowing finish going year round.
Dermaplaning isn't recommended if you have active acne breakouts, cold sores, open wounds, sunburn, or certain skin conditions in the treatment area. We'll take a look at your skin during your appointment to make sure it's the right time for treatment, and if it's not, we'll recommend an alternative that works better for where your skin is right now.
