What Are Neurotoxins and How Do They Work?
Neurotoxins are one of the most popular and well-studied aesthetic treatments in the world, and for good reason. They work by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that tell certain muscles to contract. When those muscles stop contracting as forcefully, the overlying skin has a chance to smooth out, softening the lines and wrinkles that form from repeated facial movement like squinting, frowning, or raising your eyebrows. The most common brands you've probably heard of include Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. They all work on the same core principle but have slight differences in how quickly they kick in, how they spread, and how long they last. During your consultation we'll talk through your goals and recommend the product and dosing that makes the most sense for you.
Neurotoxins are most commonly used to treat dynamic wrinkles, which are the lines that show up or deepen when you make expressions. Popular treatment areas include the forehead lines, the "11s" between the brows, crow's feet around the eyes, bunny lines on the nose, and vertical lip lines. Beyond those classic areas, neurotoxins can also be used for a subtle brow lift, a "lip flip" to roll the upper lip out slightly, smoothing the chin, softening a gummy smile, slimming the jawline by treating the masseter muscles, reducing neck bands, and even managing excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in areas like the underarms. The versatility of these treatments is a big part of why they've stayed the gold standard for so long.
A lot of clients start neurotoxins as a preventative treatment in their late 20s or early 30s to stop lines from setting in deeply, while others begin later to soften existing wrinkles. Both approaches work really well, and the right time to start is whenever it feels right for you. It's also worth knowing that these treatments can be done as subtly or noticeably as you want. If you still want full expression with just a softer look, we can dose conservatively. If you want a smoother, more frozen finish, we can adjust accordingly. It's a conversation, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
A typical neurotoxin appointment is quick, usually 15 to 30 minutes from start to finish. We start with a consultation where we'll look at your face at rest and in motion, talk through your goals, and map out your injection plan. The actual injections take just a few minutes. We use a very fine needle, and most clients describe each injection as a quick pinch or pressure. Numbing isn't typically needed, but we can apply topical numbing or use ice if you're sensitive. You're in and out easily on a lunch break.
Downtime is essentially zero. You might have some very mild redness, small bumps, or pinpoint bruising at the injection sites for a few hours to a couple of days, but most clients head right back to their day with no one noticing. We do ask you to follow a few important aftercare guidelines to get the best results. Avoid lying flat, touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas for 4 hours post treatment. Skip intense workouts, saunas, hot tubs, and alcohol for 24 hours. No facials, microneedling, or lasers for about 2 weeks. These simple steps help the product settle exactly where we placed it without migrating.
Results aren't immediate. Neurotoxins typically start showing up around day 3 to 5, with full results visible at around 10 to 14 days. That's why we recommend scheduling your appointment at least 2 weeks before any big events. If anything looks a little uneven or you feel like an area could use a bit more, we offer a touch-up appointment around the 2-week mark to fine-tune your results. Once everything has settled, you'll enjoy a smoother, more relaxed look that still allows for natural expression.
Results typically last 3 to 4 months, though this varies based on the product used, the area treated, your metabolism, and how active you are. Clients who exercise intensely, for example, often metabolize neurotoxins faster. For consistent results, most people come in every 3 to 4 months for maintenance. With regular treatment, a lot of clients find that the muscles become "trained" over time, meaning they may be able to space treatments out further as the years go on. Neurotoxins also pair beautifully with filler, PRF, Morpheus8, microneedling, and chemical peels if you're building a more complete plan.
Neurotoxins aren't recommended if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain neuromuscular conditions like myasthenia gravis or ALS, have an active skin infection in the treatment area, or have a known allergy to any of the ingredients in the product. We'll go through your full medical history during your consultation to make sure it's a good fit and build a plan tailored to your goals, your anatomy, and how natural or dramatic you want your results to look.
