What Is PRF Skin Therapy and How Does It Work?
PRF stands for Platelet-Rich Fibrin, and it's the next generation of the original PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) treatment. The process is simple but powerful. We start with a small blood draw, similar to what you'd have at a routine physical, and spin it in a specialized centrifuge. The centrifuge separates out a gold-colored, gel-like layer that's packed with platelets, white blood cells, stem cells, and fibrin. That fibrin piece is what sets PRF apart from PRP. It acts as the natural scaffolding your body uses to repair tissue, and because no anticoagulants are added to the process, the growth factors release slowly over days and weeks instead of all at once. That slow release is what gives you a longer, more effective healing response and better skin quality that keeps improving over time.
PRF Skin Therapy can be used two different ways depending on what you want to address. It can be injected directly into areas like under-eye hollows, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and fine lines to add subtle volume and stimulate your body's own collagen production. Because the product comes from your own body, it integrates naturally without the risk of allergic reaction or rejection, and it's especially popular under the eyes where traditional fillers can be tricky. The second option is applying PRF topically during microneedling, sometimes called a vampire facial, where the growth factors absorb into the deeper layers of your skin through the micro-channels created by the microneedling device. This approach is incredible for overall skin quality, texture, tone, and glow.
PRF Skin Therapy is a great option for a wide range of clients. It's especially effective for anyone who wants a natural approach to skin rejuvenation, who isn't ready for traditional filler, who's dealing with under-eye hollows or dark circles, who wants to soften fine lines, or who wants to get more out of their microneedling results. It's also a favorite for clients with sensitive skin or those who've had bad experiences with synthetic injectables. Because PRF works by signaling your own body to build new collagen and repair from within, the results look incredibly natural. You don't look "done," you just look like a better, fresher version of yourself.
A typical PRF Skin Therapy appointment takes about an hour. We start with a quick consultation to confirm your goals, then do the blood draw, usually just one small vial. While the centrifuge processes your sample, we'll cleanse the treatment area and apply a topical numbing cream. The actual injection or microneedling portion takes 20 to 30 minutes, and most clients find it much more tolerable than they expected. You'll have your own PRF ready to use within about 15 minutes of the blood draw.
Downtime is minimal. You can expect some redness, mild swelling, and possibly a little bruising at injection sites for 1 to 3 days. PRF injected under the eyes can sometimes create a puffiness that lasts a few days to a week as everything settles, which is actually a sign of the growth factors doing their work. Microneedling with PRF tends to leave the skin pink and slightly sensitive for 24 to 48 hours, similar to a mild sunburn, with some light flaking as your skin turns over. Makeup is fine the following day. We recommend avoiding intense workouts, heat, saunas, and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours, and skipping active skincare ingredients like retinol and acids for a few days while your skin heals.
Because PRF works by signaling your body to build new collagen, results build gradually, which is also why they look so natural. You'll usually notice better glow and hydration within the first week. The bigger changes, firmer and smoother skin with improved tone and texture, come in over the next 4 to 12 weeks as new collagen forms. For the best results, we recommend a series of 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, followed by a maintenance session once or twice a year. Results typically last 12 to 18 months, and PRF pairs well with Botox, filler, and other skin treatments, so it can often be done in the same visit or spaced out by a few days.
PRF Skin Therapy isn't a good fit if you have certain blood disorders, take blood thinners, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have an active skin infection in the area being treated. All of that will be reviewed during your consultation to make sure you're a good candidate and to build a plan tailored to your goals.
